Reisebericht von Marko Doboš zu den Naturformen-Einträgen S. heuffelii from Baba, Gipfel und S. marmoreum from Baba, Gipfel

J. heuffelii and S. marmoreum (?) Baba peak, Balkan Mts., BG

Dear friends,
last summer (1.7.2014.) during my cycling trip to east, a day after I visited habitat near Bebresh dam I visited another amazing habitat in Bulgaria.
There is a funny story how I got there. I slept mostly in my tent, but I also used Couchsurfing. Our couchsurfing host invited us to stay at his place, but at first we didn't know he lived in a mountains on 1400 m. We came there in the middle of the night, and found the best host and many other traveles...

Next day I visited peak Zvezdec, but found no Semps there, and in late afternoon also
climbed peak Baba, where I got lucky.

It wasn't hard to climb, because we were already in our host's house that is actually mountain lodge with more than 50 beds

I couldn't reach the top top because there is an army base. In fact we were told that the army might be unhappy because of our presence but luckily by the time we were up, large cloud covered the top so we were invisible.

I found plants from the south side where I was climbing, until the top ridge. Top habitat was more exposed to wind so plants were smaller.

J. heuffelii and S.marmoreum, Baba peak, Balkan Mts, 1740m, BG 2

At first I found J. heuffelii, in many sizes and colors, depending of the exposure. Plants on more exposed sites were smaller, colored red, and didn't formed dense clumps.

I was very happy for finding J.heuffelii, and than I saw Sempervivum is also growing there. Now i think It's S.marmoreum of some kind. I was able to take photos of flower buds only. I found no flowering plants.

Despite the cloud on the top, when we were going down, we could enjoy the view from Baba peak.

I took samples of both species and plants from this particular location are now in culture. In the future I'm sure everyone who wants to grow this plants might get a rosette, so if you're gonna visit this habitat please, please don't take more plants from nature.

:)

Hallo, dear Marko,

it seems to be one of the most beautiful places with Sempervivum on the world. What wonderful spots with our hobby-plants.

It's really funny that you were forced to look at them because your sofa-bed was so near.

Thank you for the very good pictures and the report.

Best wishes

Balkan Mts. (syn. Stara planina that can be translated as Old Mountain) is large mountain
range that is more than 500 km long. I was riding next to this mountain for almost all of it's length.
When I was planing my trip, my first idea was to climb every mountain I like and search for plants.. in the end that wasn't possible because of exhaustion, lack of equipment, markings/maps, or I simply didn't had enough time. I was lucky enough to visit at least some Sempervivum habitats.
I would say that most natural habitats of Sempervivums are one of the most beautiful places in the world...but next habitat I will report will be my favorite Semp site

Oh, I'm looking forward to reading about your favourite place.

Thank your for your addition about the Balkan Mountains.

Dear Marko,

thank you for your next report about your visit of habitat on Baba peak in Stara planina mountains. The habitat is very interestring, I think.
On your pictures with Sempervivum marmoreum I see only plants with hairy rosette leaves. Did you see also plant with bare rosette leaves?
I am very curious about your observations in cultural conditions. Maybe the plants will look similar as plants from Mara Gidik mountain (also from Stara planina mountains).

Best regards,
jezour

Lieber Marko,

Dear jezour,
all S.marmoreum I observed there were hairy. I always take cca 3 rosettes from most different plants, but only 1 survived, and produced offsets this year.
I will send you some next spring so you can compare, because I don't have plants from Mara Gidik in my collection. I can take pics of plants in culture tomorrow.

I observed glabrous and hairy marmoreum growing together or not far from each other on Mt. Svilaja (CRO), and Mt. Cincar (BiH). Relations among this 2 morphotypes is something I'm very interested in.

Dear Marko,

about plants from Mara Gidik mountain I wrote also there in forum.

In next post you will find also the photos from culture. Do your plants look similar in cultural conditions?

Sempervivum marmoreum and the surface of the rosette leaves. We both are interested in the same problem. I know about this problem following information.
This problem exists since the description by Grisebach was published. Grisebach described Sempervivum marmoreum according to the plants from Athos mountain. He knew, that there grow two form – one with bare surface of rosette leaves, another with hairy surfaced of rosette leaves. But in the description Grisebach mention only the first form, the plants with bare surface of rosette leaves.
It is interesting, that there is not another difference in morphological character, because other characters fulfill the description or the natural variability of these plants. The surface of rosette leaves of these plants is in most cases hairy. In minority of cases are the rosette leaves glandular hairy.
I observed plants with hairy leaves on the most of habitats of Sempervivum marmoreum I visited. In most cases were these plants in minority. On some habitats I found only the plants with hairy rosette leaves.
Next research is there needed. I think, that there are two possible solutions. The first one – accept these plants as variety (for example use the name assimile – fulfills the characters of these plants) or the another solution – refill the original description.

Best regards,
jezour

Lieber Marko,

Dear jezour,
plants in culture look similar like some non exposed
specimens in habitat. I promised a photo, but I was busy all day.
I promise I'll take a picture in a few days.

Thank you for additional info about hairy specimens.
Croatian botanist (I must say add, he is very controversial figure!) reported
S.marmoreum subsp. reginae-amalie, and S.marmoreum subsp. blandum also grow in Croatia. (http://hr.metapedia.org/wiki/Hrvatsko-dinarski_žednjaci)
Official Flora Croatica Database (http://hirc.botanic.hr/fcd/) does not recognize this 2 subspecies as present in Croatia. He gave a brief description of both subspecies.
I can't tell for sure because I never observed plants in nature or cultivated plants from mentioned habitats, but I suspect that all mentioned plants are different ecological morphotypes of the same subspecies (if hairy plants are still the same subspecies).
On the top of Mt. Svilaja, he reports about small hairy plants describing them as reginae-amalie. I never reach the top of Svilaja because of 'funny' minefield situation, but I found mid sized hairy plants on lower parts of the mountain.

Do we actually know if 2 types of plants (hairy and glabrous) exchange genes successfully
and what are the offspring?
Calling hairy plants a variety is most likely, but my opinion is that genetics should also be
done (hybridization in culture and molecular phylogeny) first just to be sure.

my plan is to review distribution of genus in Croatia. During winter I'll collect all the literature, and next year, I'll do some more field work. Some species that are reported
are probably mistake. Some of the findings are even new, like S.montanum found in Velebit in 2005. I really have to visit this habitat...

Here is a promised pic from culture taken today.
Offsets are removed and planted separately.
As you can see, they are a bit different than plants in habitat.

When I collected I sent them home, and my mom put them in a soil that I
usually don't use for Sempervivum. They didn't die, they produced offsets and I left them
in the same soil, although in the future I will probably experiment to get appearance
more closer to habitat plants.

Dear Marko,

thank you for the photo of the rosette from cultural conditions. How many centimeters do have the rosette now in the culture?

Again to Sempervivum marmoreum with hairy rosette leaves.
In my opinion the exchange of genes between plants with hairy rosette leaves and plant with bare rosette leaves occurs. In most cases they are growing together on one habitat and both forms are blooming in the same time.
The situation about bare and hairy surface of the rosette leaves was not researched properly. There is not also any properly research reported in literature, the theme is seldom reported in literature. Any genetic research was not realized.

There are also next questions to this theme:
Is the character (hairy rosette leaves) strong enough to create or combine some new taxonomical unit (variety, form, subspecies)?
Do the genetic researches help us to solve this situation? How many specimens are necessary to examine? How to interpret the outcomes of the researches? How big difference in the data is allowable? I know that some explanations could provide us statistics, but it depends on available data.
What about the natural variability of the plants? The plants are quite variable and the taxonomical view on the plants should preserve it.

One note to the names you stated.
As you can see the group houseleeks is very complicated and very few people understand it.

Best regards,
jezour

Lieber Marko,

Hallo, dear jezour,

little help for translation. You wrote: What about the natural variability of the plants?
(That was a very good question, but your translation has to be: Was ist mit der natürlichen Varibilität der Pflanzen?
Also "What about .." heißt "Was ist mit ...", z. B. wenn du noch Leute für eine Aktion suchst: What about your brother? Was ist mit deinem Bruder? )

Dear friends,
I'm sorry for my absence.

jezour,
plants are now about 6 cm in diameter.
You're absolutely right when you say my assumption that hairless and hairy plants
maybe don't exchange genes is silly, because plants in the genus
hybridize very easily, even if they seem genetically and geographically very distant.

All the questions you ask yourself are great questions, but not sure if anyone
can help you with that criteria. You already know that general rule is: bigger sample is better.
That's why I think our collections with precise locality data are so precious because
they give someone, someday a possibility to make further research..genetic one I think.

:)
